Every year we’re called to property surrounding our City, Township and State Parks to trap manged and distempered raccoon due to over crowding. This is because so many people think it is legal to catch animals and release them wherever they want. Most people aren't aware of the State and Federal Wildlife Control Laws and mean no harm, but they’re overpopulating and killing with kindness. Indiana and Michigan require a Wildlife Control Operators License to deal with all wild animals. Home owners can legally deal with a Raccoon or Coyote if they damage or are about to damage your property. That means you can trap them if trapping is legal in your Township, or shoot them if shooting is legal. Once trapped, your only option is to humanly euthanize the animal or release it on Private Property You Have Permission to Release On.
